Cheers to the USA Olympic team

The close of the summer Olympics with the phenomenal showings by Team USA coincided with dinner out at a Chinese restaurant.  My cocktail 'mixed' with conversation about the weather at the Olympic site so I decided to call it a "London Fog Cutter"

The original recipe called for gin and lemon juice. Originally gin was used in many cocktails because it was the lightest tasting clear liquor. Today vodka has replaced gin and it makes a smoother tasting drink.

 • ½ oz. rum
• ½ oz. brandy
• ½ oz. vodka
• 1 oz. sweet and sour
• 1 oz. orange juice
• ½ oz. orgeat syrup
• Dash of sherry
• Mint sprig garnish   Shake and strain

Ice Cubes

I always cut up fruit  (shown here are lemon, lime and orange bits) and freeze them in an ice cube tray.  The addition of these festive ice cubes makes any drinking occasion, a party.

Wine Day

Today raise a glass and say "Cheers" in

Danish  - Skaal
German  -   "Prost" with friends, "Zum Wohl" in a more formal environment
Japanese  -   Kampai
Russian  - there is no universal drinking cheer, however paradoxal it might sound.
Thai  -   Choc-tee
and my new personal favorite,
Zulu  -  Oogy wawa

Cinco de Mayo

Classic beverage for Cinco de Mayo is the margarita.  Here's an easy preparation for Freezer Margarita:
   1.  Place everything into a sealable container.
   2.  Freeze until firm.
   3.  Break up.  Stir the concoction until its a yummy, slushy drink!
  • 1 (12 ounce) can limeade
  • 3 (12 ounce) cans water
  • 1 (12 ounce) can tequila
  • 6 ounces triple sec

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras, "Fat Tuesday", is the last day of the Carnival season and it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.  Since religious fasting lasts until Easter, the weekend before is filled with parties.  Foods from New Orleans are featured, the decor is green, gold and purple with elaborate masks and the cocktail de rigueur is the Hurricane
  • 1.5 ounce amaretto liqueur
  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 1 ounce dark rum
  • 6 ounces orange juice
  • 6 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 dash grenadine syrup
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1 maraschino cherry
Mix the first 6 ingredients in a tall (16 oz.) glass (traditionally, footed and shapely) filled with ice;   Then top with grenadine and garnish with an orange slice and a cherry.
