Kentucky Derby
If you missed the chance to wear a big hat and sip mint juleps, here's another opportunity to celebrate. The first Kentucky Derby was run on this date in 1875 and mint juleps have been the official drink since 1938. Mint juleps are properly served in a frosted silver cup but a lovely glass goblet works as well. To frost, place in freezer and remove by picking up from the inside so as not to leave fingerprints. Make a minted simple syrup by boiling 1 c. water, 1 c. sugar and 1/4 c. chopped mint leaves in a small saucepan until the sugar is completely dissolved. Allow syrup to cool, approximately 1 hour and pour through a strainer to remove mint leaves. To serve, fill 4 cups or goblets with crushed ice and pour 4 ounces of Kentucky bourbon and 1/4 cup (or more depending on taste) minted syrup in each. Top each cup with a mint sprig and a short straw.
